Roman busses are known to be highly unreliable. On some of the bus stops you wont even find a schedule so everybody is asking around when the next bus might come and how long somebody is already waiting for the bus etc. This is a common szenario on a roman bus stop in particular at the weekend or bank holidays when busses work even more irregular. None the less, due to a close bus network of the ATAC, busses in Rome are a cheap and easy means of transport to get around in the city quickly.

A characteristic of Rome and Italy in general are these small elektrobusses, which will bring the traveler by even the smallest road of the center. In Rome you will reach places like the Spanish Steps and Via del Corso direkly when you are tired of walking.
In Rome elektrobusses are an ease to the air pollution that can get fairly heavy sometimes. Up and then it will happen that a car free sunday arises when values are higher then allowed by european regulations.

At night 23 bus lines operate. Even though night busses should frequent every 30 minutes roughtly don’t be surprised when they arrive delayed. The stops are marked by an owl. Main night bus stops are Stazione Termini the main railways station and Piazza Venezia. In addition to the local bus of the city center there are blue busses (COTRAL), serving the surrounding areas and suburbs of Rome.

Using busses in Rome during your vacation you should pay attention to one rule. Always stamp your 1 Euro ticket before you enter the bus. Be aware that the 1 Euro ticket in only valid for 75 minutes. ATAC officers may enter the bus on the front and back door simultaneously and asked you for the ticket. In case you have no ticket you may expect up to a 100 Euro fine. When you have no cash it actually happens that ATAC inspectors will escort you to the next ATM cash machine and wait for you to withdraw the money. If you have no credit or debit card they will introduce you to the local police station where you could be offered to stay a night for free.
